The Land Cruiser's V-8 engine gets a 40-hp increase in power while achieving Low-Emission Vehicle II (LEV II) standards. New optional Adjustable Height Control and Adaptive Variable Suspension improve both on-road manners and off-road prowess, while a tire pressure-monitoring system improves safety. Styling tweaks include a new grille, headlights, and LED taillights.
The Land Cruiser has been around for a long time, but it is far from outdated. Modern and sophisticated, this full-size SUV is the most luxurious truck in the Toyota lineup.
Toyota launched this generation of its 4-wheel-drive wagon way back in 1981. By 1990, power came from a fuel-injected 4.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine, making 155 horsepower and driving a 4-speed automatic transmission. All Land Cruisers had on-demand 4-wheel drive.
Toyota designer, Tommy Doom interviewed in the South African Car magazine explained the background to the birth of the Land Cruiser.
This big, expensive SUV uses a quiet 4.7-liter V8 and has a smooth ride. The interior offers lots of room and a third seat. It combines plushness and quality with off-road ability. Standard ESC and a permanently engaged 4WD system are major advantages. Over the years Toyota has changed the engines used in the J40 series. The B series motor is a 4 cylinder diesel, and the H series a 6 cylinder diesel. The diesel engined trucks were never sold to the general public in the USA, though some found their way in as mine trucks. The engines are similar, within the series. For example, the F and 2F engines share many of the same parts, however. H and 2H are almost another thing.
There is a good sized following of people that collect, maintain, and drive their J-series truck off road. Toyota still offers many replacement parts, available through Toyota parts departments worldwide. Many of these trucks find their home in third world counties as work trucks, where they are abused daily by their owners. Its essence lives on in the J-70 series, which is pretty much, a J-40 with an updated front half, and slightly diffent engine offerings, such as a turbo charged diesel. It sells in many countries, though not the USA.
The Toyota FJ Cruiser (FJC) is a retro-style compact SUV by Toyota introduced as a concept at the 2003 Chicago Auto Show and in production form at the following North American International Auto Show. It went on sale in early 2006 as a 2007 model and features styling reminiscent of the original FJ-series Land Cruisers from the 1960s
The FJ Cruiser uses the 4.0L 1GR-FE DOHC V6 with VVT-i, rated at 239 hp (178 kW) at 5200 rpm, and 278 lb-ft (377 N·m of torque at 2700 rpm ([2]). It is the same engine that is used in the Tacoma and 4Runner.
