The first Skyline was introduced in April 1957,under the Prince marque, and was marketed as a luxury car. It featured a 1.5 L (1482 cc) GA30 engine producing 44 kW (60 hp). It used a de Dion tube rear suspension and was capable of 140 km/h (87 mph). The car weighed around 1300 kg. Prince Skylines were produced as four door sedans and five door station wagons.
The new 2.6-liter double-overhead-cam 24-valve six engorged by twin turbochargers was rated throughout the car's life at 280 horsepower. But that figure was only there to satisfy Japanese government engine-output regulations — it more likely made somewhere near 330 hp. And it didn't take much to boost that to 400 hp or beyond. Well beyond.
It's the most exciting car Japan has ever produced. Sorry Supra, too bad NSX, but there's nothing quite like the Skyline GT-R. A technological tour de force, the GT-R has always been the dream car of the PlayStation generation. Since 1989, modern GT-Rs have always featured a twin turbocharged engine and electronically controlled all-wheel drive and steering.
Successive generations of the GT-R have already established an unshakable position in Japan as a result of incorporating the highest levels of technology available in pursuit of ultimate driving pleasure. That superior performance transcended the oceans to make the GT-R the focus of envious looks the world over. Nissan is developing a new generation of GT-R for the 21st Century with the aim of placing it in the spotlight of the global stage, beyond the borders of the Japanese market.
During the 2001 Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan showed the Nissan GT-R Proto (with the Skyline moniker noticeably absent) showing the design direction for a future GT-R. In 2003 Nissan president Carlos Ghosn announced that Nissan would release the new GT-R, probably as a 2007 model and would do so all over the world and not just in Japan and select right-hand drive markets (Britain and Australia). Meanwhile, in tracks around the world, most notably the Nu"rburgring, development mules disguised as V35 Skylines have been seen running test. At the 2005 Tokyo Motor Show, Nissan unveiled the GT-R PROTO, a prototype version of the 2007 GT-R. It is reported that the next GT-R will be a purebred sports car not based on a sedan chassis like the previous models. The next GT-R has been confirmed for release at the end of 2007. Nissan has kept the exact powerplant a secret, with most automotive publications either a naturally aspirated V8 or a twin-turbo V6. Pricing may start at 7.5 million yen

Strongly rumored to debut in production form at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show, the "V35" GT-R will likely use a twin-turbo version of Nissan's often lauded VQ-Series, DOHC, 24-valve V6 displacing somewhere between 2.8 and 3.5 liters and making power at least comparable to the gray-market engine feeding a new all-wheel-drive system. And unlike every previous GT-R, this one will be produced with left-hand drive. Don't expect the "Skyline" name to make it over to this country, though, as it will likely be called the Infiniti GT-R.
