Technical features
intermediate automobile manufactured by Honda since 1976. Currently in its seventh generation, the Accord has been sold in most automotive markets in the world, achieving considerable success especially in the USA, where it has been the best-selling Japanese car for 15 years running from 1982 to 1997, and became the first Japanese-branded vehicle to be manufactured there.
The Accord was originally planned to be a V6-powered car with a long hood and sporty pretensions. Honda chose the name Accord . The initial design was changed to a fuel efficient, low emission vehicle since it was introduced during the fuel crises of the 1970s. In the United States and Japan, a version was produced using Honda's CVCC technology, meeting emission standards of the 1970s and 1980s without a catalytic converter.
The seventh generation of the Accord was launched in 2002.
The USDM Accord was given a new level of refinement with chrome interior accents and higher grade materials. The lineup still included the seemingly de-facto DX, LX, EX, LX-V6 and EX-V6. Mechanically, the 4-cylinder engine was the new K-series, and the 6-cylinder was the same J-series V6 as the sixth generation's, but revisions to the intake and exhaust contributed to a 40 hp (30 kW) increase.
A specific 4-cylinder model is the first production car in the world to meet California's Super Ultra Low Emission standards. The 2003 model year also debuted Honda's GPS assisted Navigation system as an option for the Accord.
The 4-cylinder engines were now controlled with Drive-By-Wire (DBW), rather than a throttle cable, providing for smooth operation and enhanced throttle response. (Accord V6 engines already utilized DBW prior to the 2006 model year). Due to these improvements the V6 engine was renamed the J30A5 from the previous J30A4, and the 4-cylinder from the K24A4 to the K24A8. For the Brazilian market, the 2.4L engine was dropped in favour of a smaller 2.0L 4-cylinder i-VTEC K20A engine generating 150 hp. This was done to make the car more competitive against the newer Ford Fusion and Chevrolet Vectra.
The Honda Accord Hybrid was launched in 2005. EPA estimates are 25/34 mpg for city/highway driving.
The Accord Hybrid somewhat competes with the Toyota Camry Hybrid. The two vehicles are reflective of the differing objectives of each respective automaker. The Camry Hybrid is clearly made for economy rather than power and performance. It has just 147 HP but manages EPA estimates mpg of 38/40.
The Accord Hybrid makes 253 HP from a 3.0L V6 derived from the Honda Odyssey minivan and an electric motor with Integrated Motor Assist (IMA)™. Performance bests that of the naturally aspirated V6 Accords. The Accord Hybrid can shut off 3 of the 6 cylinders under certain conditions for better fuel economy, a technology that Honda calls Variable Cylinder Management (VCM)™.

In May 2006, renderings of the 2008 Accord in Japanese car magazines suggested the sedan would take many styling cues from the new Honda Civic. In December 2006, Honda showed a sketch of a soon-to-be-released Accord coupe concept.
2008 Honda Accord Coupe Concept . Honda plans on unveiling an Accord concept that will provide hints to the all new 2008 model at the Detroit Auto Show, this January. The car will be a great competitor to the new Nissan Altima Coupe that will be out next summer. There are also rumors circulating that the new coupe will have the same turbo engine as the Acura RDX.
