Technical features
The Ranger is one of the last truly "compact" pickups on the market. Nissan and Dodge have moved their smaller trucks into the mid-sized pickup arena, while Toyota and Chevrolet offer a great deal more interior room with their Crew Cab models.
The new Ranger vehicles will be powered by two new twin-cam turbo-diesel engines featuring common-rail direct fuel injection for effortless, high-torque pulling power.
The current line of Rangers was introduced in 1982 for the 1983 model year. It replaced the Ford Courier, an Americanized version of the Mazda B-Series. The compact Ranger was styled after the full-size Ford pickups, and is also offered with a four wheel drive option. The Ford Ranger is currently offered as a 2.3 litre I4, a 3.0 litre V6, and a potent 207 horsepower 4.0 litre V6. All transmissions are 5-speed w/overdrive and come with a choice of manual or automatic.
Although it received a freshening in 2001 that brought more power and a serious off-road version called the FX4, the lack of a recent full redesign has left the Ford Ranger behind the top pickup trucks in this segment in terms of passenger capacity and performance.
Since then, all of its competitors from the Dodge Dakota to the Toyota Tacoma have been redesigned and enlarged towards the mid-size market, leaving the Ranger the only original compact truck in its size range, with many offering V8 engines, and undergoing two generations of redesign.
The 1995-97 interior was retained. The twin I-beam front suspension was replaced by a wishbone-style system and the front half of the frame was of "boxed", rather than C-channel construction. The four-cylinder was bumped up to a 2.5 L SOHC I4 rated at 119 hp. That engine was replaced by a new DOHC 2.3 L Duratec I4 in mid-2001. 2001 also saw the pushrod 4.0 L V6 replaced by the SOHC version from the Explorer, bringing with it a beefier M5OD-R1HD manual transmission.
New 2007
The 2007 Ford Ranger adds a slew of standard features including Personal Safety System, a tire-pressure-monitoring system, SecuriLock passive anti-theft system, MP3 capability added to the single-disc CD audio system, and an auxiliary audio input jack on all audio systems except the base AM/FM receiver. SIRIUS satellite radio is available on STX, XLT, SPORT and all FX4 models. Two new 16-inch wheels are available on TREMOR, XLT 4x4, Sport 4X2 and 4x4, and FX4 Off-Road Package. An XLT 4x2 appearance package is available on all XLT 4x2 body styles and powertrain configurations

The current Ranger is offered with a 143 hp 2.3 L I4, a 148 hp 3.0 L V6, and a 207 hp 4.0 L V6. All transmissions are 5-speed w/overdrive and come with a choice of manual or automatic. The FX4 version comes with a special 31-spline 8.8 inch rear axle equipped with a Zexel-Torsen limited-slip differential, 3 skid plates, and Bilstein shocks. This truck uses code R1 (for 2-door) and R4 (for 4-door) in the 5th and 6th positions of the VIN.
