Technical features
The Ford Mustang is an automobile produced by the Ford Motor Company, originally based on the Ford Falcon compact.[1] The first production Mustang rolled off the assembly line in Dearborn, Michigan on 9 March 1964, and was introduced to the public at the New York World's Fair on 17 April 1964, and via all three American television networks on 19 April.
Mustang was based heavily on familiar, yet simple components. Much of the chassis, suspension, and drive train was derived from the Ford Falcon and Ford Fairlane. The car had a unitized platform-type frame from the 1964 Falcon, and welcoming box-section side rails, including five welded crossmembers. Although hardtop Mustangs were the majority in sales, durability problems with the new frame led to the unusual step of engineering the convertible first, which ensured adequate stiffness.
The GT is powered by a 4.6-liter, three-vales-per-cylinder V8 that delivers a healthy 300 horsepower. Granted, a V8 engine of this size could be expected to generate more power than this, but I think it's enough power for this car that weighs a tick under 3,500 pounds.
The Mustang GT comes with choice of 5-speed manual or 5-speed automatic transmission. The latter, which is the first 5-speed automatic in a Mustang and will likely be in the vast majority of Mustangs sold, was in the test GT.
At the 2004 North American International Auto Show, Ford introduced a completely redesigned Mustang, code named "S-197", on an all-new D2C platform for the 2005 model year. Developed under the direction of Chief Engineer Hau Thai-Tang and exterior styling designed by Sid Ramnarace, the fifth generation Mustang draws inspiration from Mustangs of the 1960s.
The base Mustang, equipped with a Tremec T-5 transmission, is powered by cast irons block 210 hp (156 kW) 4.0 L SOHC Ford Cologne V6 engine, replacing the 3.8 L pushrod V6. The Mustang GT features a more rugged Tremec TR-3650 transmission with an aluminum 300 hp (224 kW) 4.6 L 3-valve Modular V8 with variable camshaft timing. The 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 is equipped with the Tremec TR-6060 transmission, sporting a durable cast iron block generating 500 hp (372 kW) from a 5.4 L DOHC 32-valve V8 engine. Electronic limiters cap the V6, GT, and GT500 at approximately 115mph (185 kph), 145 mph (230 kph), and 150 mph (241 kph).
For model years 2006 and 2007, the Pony Package option is offered for the popular V6 model. This option includes upgraded suspension, Bullitt-style wheels, wider tires, a unique grille design with fog lamps, a rear deck spoiler, and unique door striping and emblems. Previous V6 Mustangs had scarce aftermarket support; however, due to the popularity of the S-197 Mustang, aftermarket support has multiplied. A notable example is the Paxton supercharger from Shelby Automobiles in its Shelby CS6 package for V6 Mustang owners which increases the power of a V6 up to 350 hp.

The S-197 Mustang sports additional optional features such as MyColor, a color-configurable instrument cluster, available as part of the Interior Upgrade Package; a Shaker 500 (500 watts peak output) CD/MP3 6-disc audio system; the Shaker 1000 (1,000 watts peak output) CD/MP3 6-disc audio system; and brushed aluminum panels, also part of the Interior Upgrade Package. In 2007-2008, more options were offered including a Touch Screen DVD Based GPS Navigation System, heated seats, and Sirius satellite radios.
Speaking of cost, the GT convertible comes with a base price of $30,650. Our tester had a bunch of sensible options that raised the bottom line to $32,365, still sensible.
