The Ford Fusion is Ford’s midsize sedan that joined the lineup for 2006 between the full-size Five Hundred and the compact Focus. The design of the Fusion was inspired by the Ford 427 concept car including the bold three bar grille and the multi-element projector-beam headlights. The Ford Fusion is a mid-size car produced by the Ford Motor Company since the 2006 model year. It is based on the Ford CD3 platform, of which the Mazda 6 is the best known example. The Fusion went on sale in October 2005 as a 2006 model. usion debuted Ford's new three-bar grille design, which is expected to become the company's trademark look for the rest of the decade.
The Fusion was originally to be called the Futura, which was last used in North America as the name of a two-door version of the Fairmont. Ford, however, lost a trademark lawsuit to the Pep Boys auto parts store, which has a line of tires under the Futura brand. American trademark law generally considers a name abandoned if the owner does not use it for three calendar years and the long history of the name in the Ford line did not impress the court.
version of the Fusion called the Ford EcoSport is produced in Brazil. It is similar to the Fusion, but features an increased ride height, off-road suspension, larger wheels and dark bumpers. Front wheel drive, four wheel drive, turbocharged 1.0L, 1.6L and 2.0L Duratec petrol engines and 1.4L TDCi diesel engines are available.

It was the best-selling car in America for five straight years - 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, and 1996.

he 2007 Ford Fusion receives a number of standard features including front-seat side airbags, side-impact air curtains, an anti-theft perimeter alarm system, and an auxiliary audio input jack with available SIRIUS satellite radio and a DVD-based navigation system. All-wheel drive is available for the first time on V6 SE and SEL. Now standard in the SE are 16-inch aluminum wheels, fog lights, a premium six-disc CD player with MP3 capability and six speakers. Also added is an auxiliary audio input jack for audio transmission from a portable audio player along with some equipment modifications. A DVD-based navigation system is scheduled be available on the SE and SEL models later in the year.

According to Motor Trend magazine (September 2006 issue), Ford will capitalize on the success of the Fusion by making a 2-door coupe model, similar to the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry Solara. It would probably get a different name, and fill the gap left when the Ford Escort ZX2 was discontinued in 2003. If this a plan were to get the green light, the Lincoln MKZ would most likely get a coupe version too...
