The Ford Explorer is a mid-size sport utility vehicle sold mostly in North America and built the Ford Motor Company since 1990. It is still in production as of 2007, and is manufactured in Louisville, Kentucky ( March 10, 2006). It has been the best-selling mid-size SUV in the United States each year since its introduction, and was one of the vehicles instrumental in turning the SUV from a special-interest vehicle into one of the most popular vehicle types on the road.
The Explorer saw significant exterior, interior and suspension updates in 1995. The former "Twin Traction Beam" (TTB) front suspension was replaced with a more carlike independent front suspension. The Explorer lineup now consisted of two models: 2-door Explorer Sport and the 4-door Explorer. The Limited was a higher end 4-door.
The 2006 Ford Explorer is Ford’s midsize SUV which debuted in 1990 as a 1991 model and has become the best-selling SUV for the past 15 years with a total of nearly 5.5 million sold during that time. The Explorer is redesigned for 2006 with more power, cleaner emissions and advanced safety technologies. The Explorer Sport Trac was added for 2001 with a pickup-bed in place of the traditional SUV cargo.
Many additional options, including rear-seat DVD entertainment, navigation and side curtain airbags, are also available. Stability control and antilock brakes come standard. For power, the Explorer can be equipped with either a 210-horsepower, 4.0-liter V6 or a 4.6-liter V8 good for 292 horsepower. A tire-pressure monitoring system and electronic stability control are standard. Power running boards (like those on the Lincoln Navigator) that lower to allow easier to access for someone entering the vehicle and then later retract upon door closure are available on the Explorer's sister vehicle, the Mercury Mountaineer. Unlike previous Explorers, there will be no right-hand drive version, Ford Australia has a capable local equivalent instead, being the Australian designed and developed Ford Territory.
New for 2007: Ford Explorer adds more standard features including an audio input jack with all radios, auxiliary air conditioning; Reverse Sensing System and 18-inch machined aluminum wheels for Limited models; and a Safety Canopy side air curtain system on the Eddie Bauer and Limited. A number of options are available including a rear-seat DVD entertainment system with new larger 8-inch screens, heated windshields, a navigation system, power running boards on Eddie Bauer and Limited, and a new bold-looking Ironman Package on XLT models featuring 18-inch machined-aluminum wheels.
